Student Safety Concern

We are concerned about the safety of our students in crossing both University Avenue and Glasgow Street.  Some students are crossing with little concern or awareness of traffic.  We would like parents to speak to their children who are either walking to school or being dropped off on Glasgow Street.  We would like to make two recommendations to improve student safety.

  1. Students who are being dropped off on Glasgow Street should only cross Glasgow at the corner of Glasgow and University.  We have too many students coming out between two cars to cross Glasgow.
  2. Students crossing University should do so at the lights either at Fischer-Hallman or Westvale.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

2010 Lenten Mission - Help us Help Haiti!
by Savannah Schumacher & Courtney Lang

On January 12th, 2010 a massive earthquake struck Haiti and caused a great deal of destruction to the beautiful island and its people.  Leaving everything in ruins; schools, homes, businesses, and community centers, all brought down in minutes, leaving the people with nothing. This natural disaster sent shock waves around the world, springing political leaders, organizations, and citizens into action. Though efforts were made, the destruction had caused great obstacles including how to get relief to the people when airport and sea ways were blocked.  After many days of exhaustion and hard work from locals and even more from over seas volunteers, the damage was being cleared away and one after another, people were being lifted from the rubble, many still alive and some brutally wounded or dead. The reality of the devastation was broadcasted globally, and Haitians were left picking up the pieces that remained. Global efforts surged as planes and boats brought food, water, and simple first aid to those in need. Even in these rough times, the people of Haiti still kept their spirits up, looking to the future, but not forgetting the past.

This year our Rez community has chosen to participate in Haitian relief efforts through ‘Free the Children’ which was started by Craig Kielburger.  Free the Children is a non-profit international organization that empowers children in North America to take action to improve the lives of fellow children overseas. This has created an effective network of Kids helping Kids through works such as; building schools, youth missions and a multitude of fundraising events. Kielburger has hosted a multitude of fundraising events across Canada with the help of millions of student supporters. To this day Canadians have already raised over $113 million through free the children towards Haitian relief.
Now it’s our turn Rez to do our part and help our global community by donating your money to missions every week. By bringing in toothbrushes, toothpaste, and soap for our collection.  By taking part in our day of silence and break the silence events.  We can all do our part to support our neighbours over seas, so Rez take action! This year our Rez community has chosen to participate in Haitian relief efforts for our Lenten Mission projects. Keep reading below to learn about our initiatives.

Fundraising Update & Upcoming Events

Fast for Change, weekly mission collections, and more have all contributed to our fundraising totals...to date, the Rez community has raised over $14,000! This money has been raised to support the efforts of Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace and Free the Children. We also collected soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes for Mennonite Central Committee's Disaster Relief Kits!

Upcoming events:

  • March 22nd & 23rd - Haircuts for Haiti
  • March 24th - Vow of Silence
  • March 25th - Break the Silence
  • March 25th - 10 by 10

Beauty and the Beast – A Fabulous Fairy Tale Brought to Life on the Rez Stage!

Hours, days, months of practice certainly paid off for thrilled audiences this past week as our Resurrection Light and Magic Productions presented the timeless fairy tale Beauty and the Beast.  The cast sang and danced their way into our hearts as they expressed how love changes how we view the world.  The sets and costumes were amazing, and, with the beautiful melodies from the orchestra, transported the audience to an enchanted time when, through love, all things are possible.

Many thanks go to many people in our Resurrection Community:

  • our Director/Choreographer, Julia Drake, for the numerous hours spent with cast and crew developing characters and set pieces (and the countless hours spent thinking, worrying and dreaming about the production!!);
  • our Music Director, Lisa Lamont, for her vision, her unending energy and her way with the baton;
  • our Vocal Director, Christine Bencina, for her ability to draw from young voices the emotion that tells the story through music;
  • our Stage Manager Kelly Roberts, for her continual optimism and enthusiasm which kept everyone going;
  • our Costume Designer, Corinna Austin, for her creativity, talent and artistic flair which produced costumes that others could only imagine!
  • our Assistant Stage Manager, Elizabeth Chambers, for her love of organized chaos;
  • our Head of Set Decoration, Leah Ann Erickson, for her fine eye for detail and colour;
  • our Head of Make-up, Luci Santamaria, for adding the finishing touch to the characters;
  • our Poster and Ticket Design Coordinator, Ev Cameron, for her attention to detail;
  • our Property Mistress, Nadine Iley, who put the things into the hands of the cast to make their characters authentic and real;
  • our Producer, Beth Wolf, for her excellent organizational skills throughout the weeks leading up to the performances, and for making sure the bills get paid;
  • the Parents, for delivering the students to our door whenever they were asked and for continually supporting the Arts at Resurrection;
  • our countless Volunteers from our school and community – their participation made this production a true family affair;
  • and finally, to our Cast and Crew – the students who offer their talent, energy and enthusiasm every night without fail, and whose smiles and tears make our job worthwhile!
This production highlights the continual search for excellence in the Arts here at Resurrection.

Olympics at Rez

Athletic Council celebrated the fall and winter sport season by hosting an olympic pep rally.  Classes that came represented different countries and entered to their national athem.  Oh Canada was played by the supporting band class and the Resurrection spirit erupted, as the students cheered our winter teams into their CWOSSA and OFSAA finals.

Girls Volleyball Conquers CWOSSA

The junior girls’ volleyball team had an extremely successful season this year. During the season the team captured not one, but two tournament titles - a sign of things to come.  The girls finished first in their league by defeating St. Mary’s in the D8 championship, earning them a spot at CWOSSA.

The team travelled to the University of Waterloo on Friday, February 26th for their final battle of the year. After beating Grand River in the semi finals at CWOSSA the girls still had one more game to win.  Their final game was a very close match with the Phoenix coming from behind to win three games to two.  What a great end to a season of hard work.  Coaches Ingoldsby and Howell-Escobar would like congratulate the team for their success.

Senior Boys Basketball Team

The senior boys season started off with the addition of several new Grade 11’s making the team and trying to mesh with the 4 remaining seniors from last years team.  It took some time for the boys to find their role, but through strong effort in practices and a high level of internal competition, the evidence of improvement became evident on the court. By Christmas, the team began to thrive and excel, players uniting in camaraderie, playing shut down defense, resulting in capturing the Bishop Reding tournament championship and a 10 game winning streak!

That positioned the team in second place in District 8 for the playoffs, with St. Mary’s as their main opponent, standing in the way of a D8 title. A buzzer beater defeated the Phoenix on the Eagles home court in the regular season, but the Resurrection players knew they had a stronger effort inside. After defeating St. David’s in the semis, that effort was displayed on the court against St. Mary’s with a 63 – 53 District 8 Final win!

The team competed in CWOSSA, and while they narrowly missed moving onto the 2nd round in that tournament, the team showed improvement in skill, unity and support for one another, which are all signs of a successful season!
